Standing Frame Theory + Selection: When to start & Best Outcomes |
Standing is important for any child’s development and should be considered a priority for all children. As children grow and transition into adulthood, there is a wealth of evidence that continuing to practice standing provides profound benefits to the individual. This beginner level workshop will cover the core principles of standing frame selection based on assessment of the user. We will discuss strategies to facilitate assessment of individuals and how to then interpret findings into equipment configuration and selection. It allows professionals the opportunity to develop and improve their clinical reasoning skills in determining the optimal standing requirements for their clients. We will utilise elements of hands on practice, along with current research and best practice to ensure a clinically driven session in which all participants leave feeling empowered and confident. |

Postural Care in Paediatrics: 24-hour protection of body shape and supported development |
Physical disability which affects the neurological and muscular systems, can have a profound affect on a child’s ability to manage their own posture. When this ability to manage is impaired, the body becomes unbalanced which allows distortion and asymmetry to develop. This change in body shape is understood to have serious and life limiting implications if not managed correctly. Working with children puts us in a privileged position to not only protect body shape, but to nurture an understanding and importance for this practice to last a lifetime. Providing postural balance through equipment is well understood to play a vital role in the protection of body shape and symmetry… but how do we ensure that we are also promoting function and development? We will utilise elements of hands-on practice, along with current research and best practice guidelines to ensure a clinically driven session in which all participants leave feeling empowered and confident. |

Night-time Positioning and the Power of 24-h Posture Care |
Sustaining poor postures can have severe and life-threatening complications for people who have a limited ability to change position. Wrong postures combined with the force of gravity impacts the body shape negatively and can be linked with the development of contractures, reduced range of motion, problems with spasticity/muscle tone, pain, poor physiological functioning, decrease of functional ability, and so on, and so on... |

Complex Seating - The Wheelchair Seating Assessment |
Prescribing wheelchair seating equipment can be dauting at times. There are thousands of different solutions to choose from! How can we determine what is the best for our clients, particularly the ones with complex postural needs? How can we assure the prescribed solution will achieve successful outcomes? Well, the basis for any seating and mobility intervention should be, first and foremost, about the person and their body. We will increase the odds of choosing the right product if, in fact, perform a comprehensive postural assessment to identify the cause of the postural deviation. |

Considerations and Practical Strategies to support clients with Complex Postural needs |
Clients who are unable to actively support themselves in an upright and aligned position demand individualised solutions to assist not only with their posture but also with their ability to interact with the world. The provision of wheelchair seating and positioning for clients with such postural needs can be daunting and require a detailed and careful problem-solving approach. This workshop will go over assessment and intervention strategies to support clinicians, even the experienced ones, in supporting clients with complex postural, functional and skin integrity needs, particularly the ones who can only sit with external postural supports. We will discuss the pros and cons of providing custom items versus customisable solutions and we will try to reduce the fear of “not getting it right”. |
